In their latest programme, A Celebration of the Unknown, Sónico celebrates the centenary of Rovira. In an immersive concert, this Belgian ensemble invites the audience to (re)discover the quiet genius of this unjustly forgotten tango composer.

Eduardo Rovira and Astor Piazzolla are often mentioned in the same breath as the two great innovators of tango in the twentieth century. Both belonged to the generation that sought to free traditional tango from the dance hall and bring it into the concert hall, independently developing a more modern, complex style known as tango nuevo.

Yet their positions and approaches differ significantly. While Piazzolla built a bridge between tradition and innovation, Rovira went a step further. His compositions feature more complex structures and distinctly modernist harmonies. As a result, his music was less popular with the general public, but highly valued by musicians and connoisseurs. High time for a revival!
