How We Remember is an immersive sound installation by sound artist Luz Mercedes, created for Oranjewoud in collaboration with people from Heerenveen and beyond. Upon entering the tipi, visitors are enveloped in a layered soundscape of voices and whispers—field recordings interwoven with electronic elements—emerging from four speakers that invite the audience to move freely through the space.
Storytelling has always been a way for humans to make sense of the world and their place within it. Through sharing stories, we connect with one another across time, reaching both into the past and toward the future. Fairytales and folklore, in particular, offer ways of relating to nature, to our roots, and to those who came before us—as well as those who have yet to follow.
While researching local folklore, Luz Mercedes discovered that many of these stories have faded or disappeared over time, often as a result of religious conversion. Rather than seeing this as a loss, they try to approach this finding as an opportunity to bring attention to what has been forgotten and to gently reintroduce a sense of magic into the present.
