With How We Remember, artist Luz Mercedes presents a sound installation in which personal stories, fairy tales, lullabies, and memories come together. Voices from Oranjewoud and Heerenveen are woven together into a listening experience that reveals how stories are passed down from generation to generation — and how they shape the way we see life, our surroundings, and one another.
Within this installation, fragments of local history, family stories, childhood memories, and orally transmitted tales can be heard. From stories about a building or neighbourhood, to a forgotten lullaby or a family anecdote from wartime: each fragment carries something of origin, connection, and cultural identity within it.
How We Remember celebrates the art of storytelling and remembrance. As a visitor, you are invited to listen to what often remains unseen: the voices behind a place, the echo of a memory, the rhythm of a story that has endured for years. In this way, a layered soundscape emerges that is intimate, familiar, and at the same time universal.
A contemplative and meaningful installation about what we pass on, what we preserve, and what continues to live on through stories.
