Mandolinist Avi Avital is a global star and the first ever on his instrument to be nominated for a classical Grammy Award. Passionate and “explosively charismatic” (New York Times) in live performances, he is the driving force behind the mandolin’s revival: for more than two decades, he has shaped both the history and the future of his instrument, performing in the world’s most prestigious concert halls.

Trailblazer
In addition, Avi Avital has expanded the mandolin repertoire—not only through transcriptions of diverse works, but also with more than 100 commissioned compositions for mandolin, including concertos with orchestra by Fazıl Say, Jennifer Higdon, Anna Clyne, Avner Dorman, and Giovanni Sollima.

From Bach to Sollima
At the Oranjewoud Festival, he brings the mandolin to life in its purest form. Using Bach’s famous Violin Partita in D minor as a guiding thread, he takes the audience on a journey through the varied mandolin repertoire: from the Italian Baroque composer Filippo Sauli to Giovanni Sollima, who appeared at the festival last year as a cellist.

Programme

Giovanni Sollima – Prelude for solo mandolin (2001)
Ernest Bloch – Nigun from Baal Shem
Filippo Sauli – Partita for solo mandolin

Alternating with Johann Sebastian Bach – Partita No. 2 in D minor, BWV 1004
