“The Architecture of Trees” is an immersive musical performance by cellist and creator Maya Fridman, performed together with the vocal quartet Storm in a Jar (Sterre Konijn, Michaela Riener, Rianne Wilbers and Fanny Alofs) in the woodland landscape of Oranjewoud. The performance combines contemporary music, electronics, and natural soundscapes, inviting you to experience the forest as a living, resonant space.

At the heart of “The Architecture of Trees” are two world premieres by Scott Ordway and Rob Zuidam, which unfold together as a single dramaturgical arc. Inspired by myths and texts in which trees become speaking beings (from Swinburne’s Hertha to the Norse world tree Yggdrasil), the music explores our emotional relationship with nature.

In the performance, music is interwoven with electronic layers created from recordings of ancient trees by sound designer Antal van Nie. Together, sound, space, and movement form a musical ritual that encourages you to slow down, listen deeply, and reconnect with what a forest can mean—not only ecologically, but also on a human level.
