On a meadow northeast of Museum Belvédère, composer Miranda Driessen creates a composition for eight wind harps and passers-by. The passers-by are musicians performing elsewhere in the festival, who at times surrender for five to ten minutes to the chord spectrum elicited from the installation by the wind.

Three twenty-four months
The work has a total time duration of 72 hours. It begins on Friday, May 26, 2023, at 4:30 p.m. and ends on Monday, May 29, at exactly the same time. During the composition, the wind harps are tuned a good fifty times differently, forming different chords each time. Together with the wind, this forms the composition.

Night voting
To determine the times of voting, Driessen is guided by the plastic number of 20th-century architect and Benedictine monk Dom van der Laan. He used plastic number as a design principle, like Fibonacci's series, the golden ratio and the doctrine of Symmetry. It determines the way we experience space.

'You can't tell how big something is until you see it in relation to something else.' - Dom van der Laan

Sanctuary of Sound is about emptiness, eternity, heaven and earth while the stories that seem to come from the surrounding horizons recall other, past or future lives. Sanctuary of Sound is also an In Memoriam for Jan Heinke, the creator of the wind harps.
