Johann Sebastian Bach probably never thought his music would survive him. In the eighteenth century, there were other concerns for a breadwinner and his family. Still, he paid for his own publications, the best hope that his compositions would remain. Anno 2025, we have nearly a century and a half of recorded wax reels, LPs, CDs and online streams behind us. Bach's music, of course, is long in the future, Francesco Tristano (b. 1981) knows.
This Luxembourg pianist is one of the most versatile musicians of his generation. He tours the world playing baroque and contemporary piano repertoire; he produces dance tracks for electronic music labels, meanwhile working on an ambitious project to record Bach's complete piano works.
In his program Bach & Beyond, Tristano interweaves the delicacy and tonal richness of the piano with the possibilities of electronics. His simultaneous fascination with the beauty of Baroque and Renaissance on the one hand and the rhythmic pulse of techno on the other make him a rare musical personality.
