Are you a Frisian (viola) violist, cellist, or bassist between 12 and 18 years old? Then sign up for Fulkaan, an interactive clinic led by jazz violinist Julia Philippens on Sunday, May 24.
Who is Julia?
Violinist Julia Philippens is a genre-crossing musician who blends classical music and jazz, seeing improvisation as the core of her artistic voice. After completing her Cum Laude Bachelor and Summa Cum Laude Master in Jazz at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam, she founded the ensemble Fuse, achieving numerous successes, including Edison nominations and performances on Podium Witteman (now Podium Klassiek). Through composing, collaborations, international performances, and projects like Fulkaan, she aims to inspire others to explore the bridge between jazz and classical music.
What will you learn?
Improvising can feel a bit awkward if you’ve never done it before and are used to following the notes. In this clinic, Julia will teach you how to overcome this false sense of hesitation, with support from bassist Tobias Nijboer.
By working in small groups and choosing for yourself whether to sing, beat, pluck, or simply bow, you learn to improvise freely on your instrument without feeling self-conscious. You’ll discover that mistakes don’t exist in free improvisation and learn to listen more closely to your fellow musicians.
Performance
After the clinic, the entire group of participants will give a showcase concert at Festival hub De Proeftuin.
