A few years after his debut at the Oranjewoud Festival, internationally acclaimed cellist Johannes Moser is Artist in Residence in 2026. In his wake, he brings along his musical friends, each with an impressive international career. For this performance, he is joined by two Russian heavyweights: violinist Vadim Gluzman and pianist Andrei Korobeinikov, the latter of whom has previously appeared at Oranjewoud.

The programme includes, among other works, Schubert’s Piano Trio No. 1 in B-flat major, a grand four-movement piece of about forty minutes written in his late Romantic style. The expansive first movement contrasts a majestic opening theme with a lyrical cello theme, richly developed with transparent textures and expressive modulations. The slow second movement is an intensely lyrical “song without words,” featuring an intimate duet between the strings and constantly shifting tonal colors. Schubert concludes with a playful scherzo and a complex rondo finale, in which singing, dancing, and instrumental depth merge seamlessly.

The concert opens with Shostakovich’s Piano Trio No. 1. This one-movement trio was the composer’s first experiment with chamber music and is one of his most peculiar and unsettling early works. In roughly ten minutes, it swings between modernity and Romanticism, sometimes sounding like pure experimentation, sometimes reminiscent of Rachmaninov. It demonstrates the young composer’s determination to avoid conventions and academic formulas at all costs.

This concert is part of cellist Johannes Moser’s artistic residency and guest curatorship.
