Sitor Situmorang was one of the greatest Indonesian poets to have ever lived. His life reflects Indonesia’s turbulent history: from traditional Batak culture and the colonial era to the struggle for freedom and democratic reforms. His work and life are celebrated in an hour of literature and music. Orchestra de Ereprijs presents seven compositions by young Indonesian composers, all former participants of the annual Young Composers Meeting in Apeldoorn, the city where Sitor Situmorang passed away.
The works are based on poems from the poet’s bilingual collections. Under the direction of conductor Mikel Fernández, Orchestra de Ereprijs takes the audience on a musical journey. Soloists include the renowned Indonesian soprano Bernadeta Astari and tenor Georgi Sztojanov. Poet Robin Block and cellist Alfian Emir Adytia weave their contributions into the works of Sitor Situmorang. This special performance highlights the historical and cultural ties between the Netherlands and Indonesia. The project not only celebrates the legacy of Sitor Situmorang but also the role of music, poetry, and collaboration in connecting continents, generations, and traditions.
