For the project Zzzoom! , former Composer of the Fatherland Mayke Nas was commissioned by Oranjewoud Festival to design and build an instrument. It is a polyphonic flower bed consisting of mechanically driven speakers on stalks that tap, buzz and produce other sounds. In composing for this "humming orchestra," she was inspired by the many insects in her own vegetable garden. The purchase of a macro lens enabled her to see everything that fleetingly buzzed by in the garden. Ah, a bee...' became: 'Ha! A trumpeter bee!" or "Hey, a feathered foot bee!". Ditto with the flies, wasps, beetles, spiders, beetles et cetera. From anonymous passersby, they became recognizable guests, each with their own characteristics.
Zzzoom! is the working title of a multi-year project initiated by Oranjewoud Festival in which the various facets of location music are being explored and brought to fruition.
