Douwe, a farm boy from a village on the Linge River, goes wandering in search of food for him and his mother because of the prevailing famine. On one of those hopeless trips, he comes across the devil's grandmother in a forest. He helps her and receives a violin as a reward. When he plays it, he notices that his hunger and fatigue disappear and he manages to scrape together his food while playing.
But ... one day he encounters the devil who proposes that he trade his violin for a little book that allows him to predict the future. "Handy if you want to play in the casino!". Douwe agrees and in no time he is treasure rich. But he is no longer happy because it seems that with his violin he has also sold his soul to the devil. He knows he must somehow get his violin back....
