In 2010, performance artist Marina Abramović exhibited herself at the Museum of Modern Art in New York with The Artist is Present. Sitting quietly at a wooden table facing an empty chair, she waited for different visitors to take a seat opposite her and look her in the eyes. Often, they would be moved to tears.
This inspired mezzo soprano Cora Burggraaf to create a musical equivalent. In The Music is Present, she sings a song, accompanied by pianist Hans Eijsackers, while standing next to or facing members of the audience. Rarely will you enjoy songs in such an intense, personal way as in this programme and yet, this is an experience that doesn’t just engage the one person, but the whole audience.
