These are places that you never see with the naked eye, the under and above water world of the special De Deelen nature reserve. In 'It geheim fan de Deelen', the regional broadcaster Omrop Fryslân takes you on a special journey to this nature reserve. Descend into the old Cold War bunker in Oranjewoud and experience the under and above water world of De Deelen. ‘It geheim fan De Deelen’ can be seen throughout the festival.
The low-lying middle of Friesland consisted mainly of peat bogs mid-way through the 20th century. De Deelen is a remnant of this and consists of wetlands, dredging channels with a lot of open water, and grasslands.
Film-maker Herman Zeilstra uses a specially developed camera installation to take the most extraordinary images of De Deelen for Omrop Fryslân: "When walking through the area, you mainly see the life above water. As a walker, you don’t really get to see what’s all going on under the marsh water but we use the installation to explore this and show it to you."
Herman Zeilstra has previously made camera installations for the University of Groningen for the black-tailed godwit research by Prof. Theunis Piersma. Along with Sytze Pruiksma, he also created the Lân show for the Fries Festival. This show could also be seen at the Oerol festival and in New York at the New Island Festival.
